A COUPLE of hours later, the coffee table was covered with empty cardboard containers. Beau and Tollison were sipping on a glass of wine, Beau lying against the hearth, cushioned by throw pillows, and Tollison lying with his head in Beau’s lap.

“Damn that was good,” Tollison said, picking his teeth with a toothpick while Beau rubbed his head.

“Hit the spot,” Beau agreed. “Tol?”

“Yeah.”

“What kind of role do you see Auggie and Bruce playing in this retrieval, as you call it?”

“More reconnaissance and defensive roles, I think. But until we get a solid plan, we won’t know for sure. Why? Are you having second thoughts involving them?”

“No. I mean it’s not really my decision, but I certainly don’t want them caught up in some type of international incident.”

“I’ll make sure they stay safe. I won’t have them anywhere near the museum when the heist goes down. If Auggie’s contact in the FBI can’t guarantee us immunity when we lead the proper authorities to the painting, then we bypass them altogether.”

“How do we bypass them?” Beau asked.

“We retrieve the painting, deliver it to a predisclosed location, turn in DeMatteo anonymously, and let the chips fall where they may. After that we’ve got to let it go. Either DeMatteo gets away with kidnapping and blackmail, or he doesn’t. And then I’m finished.”

“I’m happy to hear that,” Beau said, still rubbing Tollison’s head.

“And Beau?”

“Yeah.”

“I meant what I said about marrying up. You’re a handsome, smart, and funny man with a clear sense of right and wrong, and I love you no matter how much money you have. Besides, I have more than enough for both of us. You ground me, Beau, and I wouldn’t trade you for all the money in the world.”

Beau took the glass of wine out of Tollison’s hand and placed it on the hearth next to his. He slipped out from under Tollison and placed a pillow under Tollison’s head. He stretched out next to his lover, cupped his face in his hands, and kissed him. “Thank you. I love you.”

Tollison ran his hand under Beau’s T-shirt and caressed Beau’s warm chest. “How about showing me how much you love me?”

“It would be my pleasure.”
